St. John Neumann Parish is again offering the Sanctuary Course for Catholics.
What is the purpose of the Sanctuary Course for Catholics?
The purpose of The Sanctuary Course for Catholics is to raise awareness and start conversations in local parishes regarding mental health. Consequently, The Sanctuary Course for Catholics is intended for educational purposes only and the information provided is not a substitute for medical or therapeutic advice. What resources will be used in the Sanctuary Course?
The Sanctuary Course for Catholics is an outgrowth of the Formed resource. It was developed by the Augustine Institute by Dr. Tim Gray, prominent Catholic scripture scholar. Participants will use a Sanctuary Course book and watch films at each of the 8 meeting sessions. These will be conducted at St. John Neumann Church.
The lead facilitators will be Deacon Willie Williams and parishioner Carol Kessler.
What are the perspectives on mental health that the Sanctuary Course for Catholics will address?
The perspectives on mental health and mental health problems that will be highlighted include: the psychological, the social, and the theological. Don’t be intimidated by these technical terms. Whether you know it or not, your life is already impacted on a daily basis by the dynamics of these terms.
Why would Catholic churches wish to offer the Sanctuary Course for Catholics?
The course is purely educational in nature. Each lesson offers information on a dimension of mental health. The church is encouraged to offer this course in order to start the conversation about mental health issues. The CDC research claims that 40% of Americans will suffer from some form of mental health challenge or are suffering from a mental health challenge. The stress of today’s modern culture is manifesting itself in mental health issues.

People with questions about mental health; professionals with knowledge to share; those who support the mental health of loved ones; and anyone looking for encouragement & understanding.
What is the cost?
The only cost is the purchase of the Sanctuary Course for Catholics book. The cost is $20.
What are the meeting dates for the Sanctuary Course?
The Sanctuary Course will start Thursday, September 7th, 2023 and run every Thursday through October 26th from 7:00 to 8:30pm in Room 122 (lower level).
What are the expectations?
Attendance at all 8 meetings is needed to gain benefit from the course. It is also hoped that participants will join in group discussions and be mindful of allowing others a fair amount of time to share as well.
