Welcome, Father Canova!
Greetings! My name is Reverend Father James C. Canova! You can call me Fr. Jim, Fr. James, Fr. Canova, or just plain Father. I am a later vocation to the priesthood. I entered Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland in 1996 at age 38, and I was ordained a Roman Catholic priest of Jesus Christ in May 2001, at age 43, by the late Bishop Thomas Doran of Rockford.
Prior to my entering the seminary, I worked in the Oil and Gas Industry for about 15 years, in various capacities, including a supervisor, buyer, marketing rep., etc. I earned a B.S in business from UIC, and an M.B.A. from NIU, in Dekalb. I attended Lane Technical Public High School, and St. Edwards Catholic Grade School, both in the city of Chicago.
I was born and raised a Catholic by my dad, the late Carl, and my ma Dolores, who is still alive and resides in Chicago. I have two brothers (Tim and Mike) and one sister (Mary) who live with their families in the greater Chicagoland area. I also have 4 nieces and 1 nephew, 1 great niece and 1 great nephew.
I have a strong devotion to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, Divine Mercy, and to Our Lady, especially in the Holy Rosary. I owe my conversion and priesthood to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mother. I especially love to say the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and to hear confessions. I also enjoy explaining the Roman Catholic Faith, particularly to those who have a desire to grow in their Faith. I have been active in Pro-Life, Knights of Columbus, and the St. Vincent DePaul Society at various times both before and during my priesthood.
I’m not as physically active as I used to be, but I still enjoy various sporting events, old movies, and music.
I look forward with great anticipation and excitement to serving the faithful of St. John Neumann’s in St. Charles, and to get to know you all better as time goes by. Thank you and God Bless you!
